Brent Stockwell chose his favorites—including the story of aspirin— in a new book on the science behind drug discoveries. In the telling, Stockwell reveals how curiosity, persistence, and scientific know-how combine in sometimes powerful and far-reaching ways. In many cases, extraction and synthesis methods have been combined

Brent R. Stockwell grew up in Bay Terrace, a suburban neighborhood in New York City and graduated from Hunter College High School. He received his A.B. in chemistry and economics from Cornell University, graduating summa cum laude. He received his Ph.D. degree in chemistry, doing his doctoral HHMI Gives 50 Early Career Scientists a Jump on Their Next Big Idea. Fifty of the nation’s best early career science faculty will have more time and resources to focus on their boldest—and potentially transformative—research ideas with support from a new initiative from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Prof Brent Stockwell from the dept of Biological Sciences & dept of Chemistry Columbia University chemical biologist Brent Stockwell has invented several drug discovery technologies. As a graduate student, he founded a company, CombinatoRx, that develops combinations of FDA-approved drugs to fight disease. Brent R. Stockwell, Ph.D. is a Professor at Columbia University in the Departments of Biological Science and Chemistry. His research involves the discovery of small molecules that can be used to understand and treat cancer and neurodegeneration, with a focus on mechanisms governing cell death. Summary. We are using chemical and biological tools to study ferroptosis, a form of regulated cell death discovered in the Stockwell Lab. Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of oxidative, non-apoptotic cell death that is tightly linked to metabolism and disease.. We are exploring how ferroptosis is triggered during normal physiological processes and in disease states, and how it can be
