Hard oil finish
Danish Oil Finish Mixes Oil and Poly. Danish oil, often lumped in as an oil finish, is actually a thin oil and varnish mixture. The oil helps bring out wood’s beauty, while the varnish resin offers somewhat more protection against chemicals, heat, scratches and stains than either oil or wax. When it comes to bringing out the natural beauty of a highly figured piece of wood, such as quilted maple or quartersawn oak, nothing beats a hand-rubbed Danish-oil finish. Typically a Danish oil consists of a mixture of tung oil and varnish. It penetrates into the wood, unlike a film finish, which sits on the surface. That penetration gives a depth to the wood's grain that's hard to achieve with a film finish. These finishes are a fraction of the thickness of a conventional polyurethane finish, but if you refresh your hardwax oil just once a year, and it will deliver the performance of a conventional multi-coat poly or varnish. Yes, the hardened oil involves more maintenance, but it is a small price to pay for a VOC-free and solvent free experience. OIL, HARD WAX OIL or POLYURETHANE? The finish you select for your timber flooring or wall panelling depends on the intended use of the space and the aesthetics. Traditional oils and hard waxes are the most natural choice – in terms of aroma and look – and protect the timber by soaking into it, strengthening it and repelling water. One of the outstanding qualities of natural oil and, though to a slightly lesser degree, hard wax oil finishes is their ability to enhance the natural beauty of your wood floors.
